International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the progress made towards gender equality while recognizing that there is still a long way to go. Women have made tremendous contributions to every field, including education, yet their achievements are often overlooked and undervalued. As we celebrate the accomplishments of women in academia, we must also acknowledge the challenges that women face in education. The Mulkern Foundation is committed to advancing the cause of gender equality, particularly in education. We recognize the crucial role that women play in shaping the future of our world, and we are dedicated to supporting them in their pursuit of academic and professional excellence.
Women have made significant contributions to the field of education throughout history. From Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori method of education, to Fatima al-Fihri, the founder of the University of Qarawiyyin, which is recognized as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Yet, despite their achievements, many women in academia still struggle to receive the recognition and support they deserve. Women face numerous challenges in education, including discrimination, bias, and harassment. Research has shown that women are less likely to be hired for academic positions, receive lower salaries than their male counterparts, and are often subjected to hostile work environments.
The Mulkern Foundation recognizes that gender discrimination and bias are complex issues that require a multifaceted approach to address. We support policies and initiatives that promote gender equality in education, including increasing funding for women’s programs, providing mentorship and support for women in academia, and addressing gender-based violence and harassment.
This International Women’s Day, let us celebrate the contributions of women in academia while also recognizing the challenges that they continue to face. The Mulkern Foundation is committed to advancing the cause of gender equality in education and supporting women in their pursuit of academic and professional excellence. Together, we can work towards a world where women are valued and empowered to reach their full potential.
